State-Specific Licencing Requirements*

Here is a summary of licencing requirements in various Australian states :

New South Wales (NSW) – Requires a Certificate III in Plumbing, industry experience, and registration with NSW Fair Trading.

Victoria (VIC) – Plumbers must be licensed or registered with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Additional endorsements are required for gas fitting and drainage.

Queensland (QLD) – Required for plumbing work over $3,300. Must complete Certificate III in Plumbing + meet experience requirements. (Queensland Building and Construction Commission – QBCC)

South Australia (SA) – Plumbers must be licensed contractors or registered tradespeople. (Consumer and Business Services – CBS)

Western Australia (WA) – Must obtain a Plumbing Contractor’s Licence or Tradesperson’s Licence from Building and Energy WA.

Tasmania (TAS) – Plumbing work requires registration or licensing through Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS).

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – Needs Certificate III in Plumbing, supervised experience, and registration with ACT Planning and Land Authority.

Northern Territory (NT) – Plumbers must register as building practitioners under the NT Building Practitioners Board.
