State-Specific Licencing Requirements*

Here is a summary of licencing requirements in various Australian states :

New South Wales (NSW) – Requires a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade and relevant experience. Licensing is managed by NSW Fair Trading.

Victoria (VIC) – Metal fabricators must be registered or licensed through the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).

Queensland (QLD) – Required for work over $3,300. Must complete Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade. (Queensland Building and Construction Commission – QBCC)

South Australia (SA) – Metal fabricators must be registered or licensed as contractors or tradespeople. (Consumer and Business Services – CBS)

Western Australia (WA) – No direct licence for metal fabrication, but large projects require builder registration. (Building and Energy WA)

Tasmania (TAS) – Metal fabricators working on structural projects must be licensed under Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS).

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – Requires Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, supervised experience, and registration with ACT Planning and Land Authority.

Northern Territory (NT) – Must register as a building practitioner under the NT Building Practitioners Board.
