State-Specific Licencing Requirements*

Here is a summary of licencing requirements in various Australian states :

New South Wales (NSW) – Required for work over $5,000. Needs Certificate IV in Building & Construction + 2 years experience. (NSW Fair Trading)

Victoria (VIC) – Must register as a Domestic Builder. Qualification & experience vary. (Victorian Building Authority – VBA)

Queensland (QLD) – Required for work over $3,300. Licence classes: Low, Medium, Open. (Queensland Building and Construction Commission – QBCC)

South Australia (SA) – Building Work Contractor’s Licence needed. Must meet knowledge, experience & financial criteria. (Consumer and Business Services – CBS)

Western Australia (WA) – Required for residential work over $20,000. (Building and Energy WA)

Tasmania (TAS) – Must register as a Builder Practitioner. (Consumer, Building and Occupational Services – CBOS)

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – Needs Certificate IV in Building & Construction + 2 years experience. Some require exams. (ACT Planning and Land Authority)

Northern Territory (NT) – Registration required. Must show qualifications & experience. (NT Building Practitioners Board)
